Advanced Sensing and Imaging Technologies for Multiphase Systems

TECHNICAL OUTLINE

Multiphase systems are widespread in both engineering and biological systems. In industry, they appear as gas-liquid, liquid-solid and gas-liquid-solid flows, in energy production, chemical processing, and pipeline transportation. In living systems, they appear as blood cell suspensions, pulmonary air-tissue distributions, and perfusion through capillary networks. In all these cases, the ability to detect, image, and quantify the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of phases, interfaces, and dispersed media is essential for process efficiency, safety, and biomedical measurement and diagnosis.

Recent advances in electrical, acoustic, optical, X-ray, and hybrid sensing modalities, together with imaging techniques such as tomography, high-speed visualization, particle image velocimetry, and Doppler imaging, have substantially extended what can be measured non-invasively in opaque or inaccessible multiphase media. These modalities are complemented by reconstruction algorithms, inverse-problem methods, and data-driven interpretation. Different applications share these sensing principles and imaging strategies, yet differ in operating constraints. Methods developed in one domain, such as fast electrical tomography, multimodal fusion, or AI-driven reconstruction and interpretation, have shown potential in the other.

This special session aims to provide a dedicated forum for advanced sensing and imaging technologies for multiphase systems, spanning industrial and biomedical domains. We welcome contributions that advance sensing principles, imaging methods, reconstruction algorithms, or validation strategies, with particular interest in cross-domain transferability.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
– Novel sensors, sensor systems, and sensing materials for multiphase systems
– Electrical, acoustic, optical, X-ray and hybrid sensing modalities for multiphase distributions
– Imaging methods for phase distribution and interfacial structure characterization
– Sensing and imaging in energy-related multiphase flows
– Multiphase monitoring and characterization in chemical systems
– Biomedical multiphase sensing and imaging
– Multimodal sensor fusion and multi-physics imaging for multiphase media
– Artificial intelligence for multiphase sensing, imaging, and interpretation
– Reconstruction algorithms and inverse problems for multiphase imaging
– Signal processing and uncertainty analysis for multiphase measurement systems
All submissions will be rigorously peer‑reviewed and are expected to present novel contributions that advance the state‑of‑the‑art in measurement science, with clear relevance to real‑world multiphase systems.
