Flow & Energy Measurement for the Energy Transition

TECHNICAL OUTLINE

The transition to sustainable energy systems demands advanced metrology integrating flow and energy measurement across diverse applications. Central is accurate characterization of fluid properties, including hydrogen, energy gases and carriers, biofuels, synthetic fuels, and CO2 for capture and storage. Parameters such as density, viscosity, calorific value, composition and compressibility affect flow behaviour and energy content, requiring reliable, real-time measurement for process optimization and custody transfer.

In geothermal systems, flow and energy measurements are critical for assessing thermal output and long-term sustainability. Emerging technologies such as concentrated solar power (CSP) require precise monitoring of heat transfer fluids to maximize efficiency and stability.
Flare and flue gas metering enables emissions monitoring, regulatory compliance, and energy loss assessment. Wind energy illustrates the coupling of flow and energy: measurements of velocity, turbulence and air density are essential for determining power output and reducing performance uncertainty.
Advanced flow simulation (CFD, digital twins) increasingly supports design, operation, and predictive maintenance in energy systems. In district heating and smart gas grids, integrated measurements ensure efficient distribution and demand-side management, while precise flow measurement improves building energy efficiency and climate control.

Overall, integrating flow and energy measurement is foundational to efficient, reliable, sustainable energy systems amid global decarbonization.
This Special Session, “Flow & Energy Measurement for the Energy Transition,” combines topics from TC9 (Flow measurement) and TC20 (Energy and related quantities), supported by the EMN “Energy Gases.” It features a WIMER (Women in Metrology and Energy Research) networking event for women scientists, doctoral candidates and students worldwide, fostering exchange and collaboration via a panel discussion.
