Metrology for Sustainability in Indo-Pacific Area

TECHNICAL OUTLINE

The Special Session on “Metrology for Sustainability in the Indo-Pacific Area” will highlight the critical role of measurement science, instrumentation, and metrological technologies in addressing sustainability challenges across the region. Reliable, accurate, comparable, and traceable measurements are fundamental for monitoring resource consumption, environmental changes, energy performance, healthcare outcomes, industrial processes, and mitigation strategies. Metrology therefore provides the scientific foundation for evidence-based decisions, sustainable technologies, and societal resilience.

The session will provide a multidisciplinary platform for researchers, academicians, metrology organizations, industries, technology developers, and policymakers to present advances at the intersection of metrology and sustainability. Key themes will include environmental metrology for air and water quality, greenhouse-gas and pollutant measurements, climate monitoring, and resource assessment; energy metrology for renewable energy, energy efficiency, low-carbon technologies, and intelligent energy systems; and industrial metrology for sustainable manufacturing, process optimization, waste reduction, resource efficiency, and circular-economy applications.

The session will also address Measurements in Biology and Medicine, including biomedical measurements, physiological signals, diagnostics, biosensors, wearable devices, healthcare instrumentation, and AI-enabled measurement systems. Emerging integration of digitalization, artificial intelligence, IoT, smart sensors, and data-driven measurement will be explored, with emphasis on measurement reliability, uncertainty, calibration, traceability, validation, interoperability, and data quality.

Cross-cutting topics will include measurement uncertainty, calibration, traceability, reference measurements, standards, certification, conformity assessment, and international measurement comparability. Contributions on circular economy, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, lifecycle measurement, recycling, and resource management are also encouraged.
