Advanced Measurement for the Built Environment: towards a decarbonized, sustainable building sector
TECHNICAL OUTLINE
The built environment is a complex system involving materials, components, buildings, infrastructures, construction processes, indoor and outdoor environments, and their interactions with users throughout the entire life cycle. Its transformation towards safer, healthier, more resilient, resource-efficient and low-carbon solutions increasingly depends on the availability of reliable, accurate and interoperable measurement data.
This Special Session focuses on advances in measurement science and technologies for the characterisation, monitoring and assessment of the built environment, from material and component scale to buildings and infrastructure systems. Contributions are invited on innovative sensors, experimental methods, in-situ and laboratory measurements, non-destructive testing, distributed monitoring, imaging and remote sensing, as well as multi-parameter and multi-scale measurement approaches.
Relevant applications include measurement system for characterisation of construction materials and components; structural, mechanical, thermal and hygrothermal measurements; indoor and outdoor environmental quality; air quality, thermal comfort, lighting and acoustics and human-centric models; building envelope and systems monitoring; construction and renovation processes; durability, degradation and structural health; resource and material flows; and measurements supporting circularity, embodied impacts and operational assessment.
Particular attention will be given to measurement uncertainty, calibration, traceability, data quality, sensor fusion and the integration of measurement data with BIM, Digital Twins, AI-based methods and life-cycle information systems. The session aims to bring together measurement scientists, engineers and built-environment researchers to discuss how advanced measurements can support evidence-based design, construction, operation, renovation and end-of-life decisions.
