Low frequent vibrations in ground, air and water – challenges for calibration and traceability
TECHNICAL OUTLINE
Low-frequency vibrations are measured in the air as infrasound, in water and as ground motion for a wide range of purposes: from earthquake detection, through exploration and structural design of buildings, to the detection of nuclear weapon explosions – all these fields are of great significance in the context of ‘metrology for humanity’, the title of the World Congress. Up to now, many of the mentioned quantities are measured without traceability to the International System of Units (SI). To resolve this issue, research has been carried out in recent years and is still ongoing.
The session would be dedicated to the current status and ongoing research in this area. IMEKO TC22 covers only vibration and not sound in air or underwater acoustics. However, this special session is dedicated to cover these quantities/fields (for which no other IMEKO TC exists) due to their similarity to TC22’s aims and focus. This proposal was made in agreement with the other TC22 officers.
