Reliable measurements are essential for addressing societal challenges related to climate change, environmental protection, energy transition, industrial competitiveness, digitalization and public health. Metrology provides the foundation for trustworthy and comparable measurement results, supporting scientific research, innovation, regulation, and evidence-based decision-making. The European Metrology Networks (EMNs), established under EURAMET, strengthen collaboration across Europe by bringing together National Metrology Institutes, Designated Institutes, academia, industry, regulators, and other stakeholders. Through coordinated activities, EMNs identify emerging measurement needs, promote best practices, foster harmonization, and support the uptake of metrological knowledge and infrastructure.

This special session, jointly organized by the EMNs POLMO (Pollution Monitoring), Mathmet (Mathematics and Statistics for Metrology), and Clean Energy, will highlight how European metrology networks is contributing to a more sustainable and resilient Europe. An introductory presentation will provide an overview of the EMNs’ framework and its role in addressing strategic scientific, industrial, and societal challenges. The session will present examples of collaborative metrology projects and activities supporting environmental monitoring, clean energy technologies, data quality, and trustworthy measurement capabilities for emerging applications. By showcasing successful cooperation between European metrology networks and stakeholders, the session will demonstrate how metrology underpins innovation, supports sustainability goals, and strengthens Europe’s resilience in the face of current and future challenges. This session will be of interest to researchers, metrologists, policymakers, regulators, and industry representatives.
